Tough Times by Max Lucado

Do your know someone who is hurting? Someone who has just received dreadful news? Someone who lost a loved one?

It seems as though bad things happen during the holiday season. About a week before Christmas my daughter told me that her best friend, the friend who had helped her most when my daughter’s husband was killed in a dreadful accident had just learned she had incurable lung cancer and only has a short time to live.

Right after Christmas my granddaughter emailed me asking for prayer for her pastor’s family–their oldest son had been killed horribly by someone he didn’t even know.

We lost our son to cancer several years ago and his birthday was three days after Christmas. Because I do know where he is and that I’ll see him again, I don’t mourn like someone without such an assurance might–however, I do miss him and can’t help feeling sad.

When I read Tough Times it touched my heart. This little book would be the perfect gift for anyone who is having a difficult time. In a simple but compelling manner, Lucado points through the Bible just how much God loves us. The book ends with the perfect prayer for troubled times.

Wow! This is one of the most unusual books I’ve read in years. Once I got started, I couldn’t put it down.

Lucas is an unusual hero. He knows very little about himself, and what he does know is suspect. Uncomfortable around people, he’s created his own world by spying on others who work in offices all around the city. He sleeps in crawl spaces, on the commuter trains, and has secret places all over the city.

When he learns there are others doing much the same as he, though they like to watch people in their own homes, he thinks he’s finally found kindred spirits. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work out like that.

The book takes a whole new twist, when he finds out how easy it is to get into and spy on residents of their homes. He also finds out that things are happening that he just can’t ignore and feels compelled to stop. And guess what? He also learns that he’s being watched too.

The book may make the reader feel a bit paranoid–could someone be doing what Lucas and others are doing?

If you love a book that you will not be able to second guess, one that is full of suspense and action, with a hero that you’ll be compelled to cheer on, The Unseen is for you.

House of Dark Shadows, by Robert Liparulo

This is the perfect book for a boy who is a reluctant reader. When fifteen-year-old Xander King is forced to move away from his friends and interests into a backwoods town in northern California he isn’t the least bit happy. An up-and-coming film maker, he sees things a bit differently than any of his family. When his parents decide to move into a dilapidated vacant house with too many rooms to count, Xander is the first one to pick-up on the fact that something weird is going on with the house.

Xander and his younger brother, David have an eerie experience when they are transported from a spot in the house right into the school they’ll soon be going to. Things begin to get downright scary, when the boys learn that there are other weird things that go on in the house, including a monster-size man wandering the halls.

Once a reader gets into the story, he’ll have to read all the rest in the series because there are too many unanswered mysteries when the last page is turned in the House of Dark Shadows.

Billy, by William Paul McKay & Ken Abraham, published by Thomas Nelson

Though I’ve read other books about Billy Graham, Billy takes an entirely different look at Billy Graham through the eyes of a good friend and fellow evangelist, Charles Templeton. Unfortunately Templeton loses his faith and tries to convince Billy that he’s naive to continue believing in the Bible as truth.

The story begins with Billy reveling in a baseball win at high school and follows him as he attends his first revival meeting–the beginning of his search for what he should do in life. While attending college he meets the love of his life, Ruth.

Billy’s faith develops and grows as he becomes a successful evangelist while at the same time, as Charles also becomes a successful preacher, his faith is shattered. While at Forest Home, a mountain top retreat, Charles does his best to shake Billy’s faith and nearly succeeds. Billy calls out to God and God speaks to him.

From the retreat, Billy goes on to have his first tent meetings in Los Angeles. He preached to drunks and movie stars as well as the ordinary person, offering them the chance to accept Jesus Christ as their redeemer. I particularly enjoyed this part as I attended a few of these meetings when I was fifteen and my parents were volunteer workers for this first Billy Graham Crusade.
I remember the huge tent and all the people, and the spiritual excitement as throngs who went forward when Mr. Graham called people to come forward and accept Christ as their Savior.

The book ends with a final meeting between Billy and Charles when both are elderly. Despite Charles’ lack of faith, Billy still loves his friends.

For those who like to read about influential people who are guided by their faith in God, I recommend Billy.

While on the lovely shores of Ocean City this weekend I was able to read JoAnn Carter's "By the Book."

My opinion? "Buy the book!"

Seriously, a very good story : )

Perky 24 year old police dispatcher, Sarah Murphy, is held captive by images of her past. She doesn't trust men and is determined to hold onto her heart at all costs.

Left Coast Crime

As usual LCC was a terrific exprience. I've been to the airport (SEATAC) in Seattle before but never the city. Despite all the press about rain, it only rained one day while we were there. The rest of the time the sky was cloudless and sunny--however it was cold!

I'm not sure what day things happened, so I'll just give the highlights. First dinner we had at McCormick's which was two blocks down and three over from the hotel. The hills were daunting both going down and up. Second memorable dinner was at a Japanese restaurant with friends from Crime and Suspense--a couple I'd never met before. Dinner was scrumptious, conversation top notch.

Hutch and I went to three hours of forensic information arranged by author Jan Burke that was absolutely fasincating. All the panels I went to were either entertaining or informative. I was on one that talked about true or made-up settings. All mine are made-up of course though the small town setting in my Tempe Crabtree mysteries and my Christian horror are based on the town I live in. The Rocky Bluff P.D. series is a town on the coast about twenty miles north of Ventura CA--not fashioned after any real town.

We got to spend time with lots of our favorite mystery people too many to mention. The Anthony Award banquet had the best food I've ever eaten at a banquet anywhere. (I'm beginning to sound like a foodie.)

I sold a few books, made new friends, and had a grand time.

Miracle of Miracles

For most Christians in the US and other Western countries, persecution for our faith is beyond our understanding. And the true nature of Islam is a mystery to many.

Miracle of Miracles: A Muslim Woman's Conversion to Christ And Flight from the Perils of Islam by Mina Nevisa with Jim Croft sheds light on both of these subjects. Mina grew up in Tehran, the daughter of aristocratic fundamentalist Muslims.

She began questioning her faith as a teenager. If Allah is omnipotent, she asked, why did she have to pray in Arabic? Couldn't an all-powerful Allah understand her native tongue, Farsi? If Islam was the true religion, what danger could come from the mere mention of another faith or a holy book other than the Koran? Her questions brought the wrath of the man she knew as her kind, loving father. Nevertheless, she continued to question and search, although in secret.

A supernatural experience and a series of miracles led to her accepting Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and to a marriage to a man who, unknown to her, was also a secret Christian. They have experienced many miracles in their lives, and the "miracle of miracles" was the answer to more than twenty years of prayer. Mina's powerful testimony reminds us that God is All-Powerful, He does answer prayers, He still performs miracles today, and salvation is a gift worth persecution and even death.

Unveiling Islam: An Insider's Look at Muslim Life and Beliefs by Ergun Mehmet Caner and Emir Fethi Caner is another excellent book about Islam and the persecution of those who convert to Christianity. The Caner brothers are former Sunni Muslims who converted to Christianity. Both are active in their faith and share their experiences and the realities of Islam.Most of us cannot fathom being persecuted for our faith. Yet Muslims who convert to Christianity do so at the risk of death at the hands of their own families.

Christians, not only former Muslims, are being persecuted around the world today, and Voice of the Martyrs brings their plight to the attention of the world through the Persecution Blog.

Miracle of Miracles reminds us that all Christians must pray for persecuted Christians and for the salvation of Muslims. The threat of radical Islam can best be met by spreading the Gospel to those in the dark. Muslims practice a religion of harsh rules, submission, and violence. Christians have a personal relationship with a loving Savior who offers eternal life.

I have to ask myself: Could I stand up to persecution for my faith? I pray so.

Safe Beginnings

After arson in a battered women's shelter causes the death of a resident, Counselor Kaye Berreano continues working with the women after they move to a Red Cross shelter. Arson investigator Pete Farrell has no shortage of suspects - several residents, their husbands/abusers, and Kaye's almost-ex-husband. The mystery is flavored with experiences of the women of the safe house and the hint of a beginning of a romance, making the story more interesting and informative.

Carolyn Scheidies is an inspiring woman who writes inspiring books. I've "known" Carolyn online for several years, through Christian E-Author and other groups. She writes both fiction and nonfiction (including devotionals), and her theme is "I Deal in Hope."

KATALINA--Catalyst to Murder is one of my favorite books. It's a great mystery, a wonderful romance ... and a marvelous lesson in self-acceptance, trust, and salvation.

I especially enjoyed the fact that Katalina is disabled, as is Carolyn. When I wrote my novel Stroke of Luck with a handicapped heroine, many agents and editors rejected the book, and they often said a romance couldn't have a handicapped heroine.

Katalina proves that a wonderful romance can indeed have a handicapped heroine. God does not look at our physical appearance and abilities but at our heart and soul. A real hero will not judge the heroine by her physical appearance and abilities but by her heart and soul.

Patchwork Trail

There are no children around my house, so I'm usually not familiar with children's books. But I read Patchwork Trail by my friend Janet Kaderli and enjoyed it even as an adult. I have no doubt that young readers will identify with the main character and enjoy reading the book.

Ten-year-old Erica Kraft visits her grandparents on their farm in Caldwell County, Texas, fully expecting to be bored. However, she has fun and learns a lot — about her family, sewing, quilt-making, the history of the area, and the Chisholm Trail.

Janet includes a quilt pattern block in the e-book version of Patchwork Trail, and you can even download the pattern from her Web site. She added the pattern to the e-book after several quilters asked her about it — an advantage of e-books; Janet couldn't go back and add the pattern into the books that were already printed!

Each story includes an inspirational message as well as an interesting plot. I enjoyed being able to read a complete story during a short break.

The title story "Hand in the Dark" was my favorite, but several others were also excellent.

The Last Boat Out

Although normally the reviews posted here are books written from a Christian worldview if not specifically for the Christian market, The Last Boat Out: Memoirs of a Triumphant Vietnamese-American Family is different.

The book tells the story of a Vietnamese-American family who went through the Vietnam War (the husband as a South Vietnamese military officer and the wife as a housewife injured in the Tet offensive) and escaped to the US. Although the family is Buddhist, a Christian church sponsored them and gave them a new start in a strange land. The appreciation this family has for their adopted country and the Americans who helped them is worth reading.

The hardships they endured to save themselves and their families are almost unimaginable by those of us living in the security of our own homeland. When Lauren Delaney discovers her car has been broken into and her personal belongings stolen, she is surprised to discover the culprit is 14-yr-old Zoey Hightower.
". . . This is a book that everyone should read, especially teenagers. Filled with romance, it is the story of a father's love for his daughter as he learns to raise her alone. I loved the story line, and the characters were truly believable. The growing friendship and relationship with Lauren and Craig was well worth the read. And to mix a teenage daughter that needs guidance made the story even better.
Ms. Chapman writes from the heart. Her style of writing has you asking for more all the way to the last page. I did not want this story to end. Everything blended in so well that I wished for a higher possible rating. A story with this magnitude needs to be on the New York Times list. It touched my heart in many ways. You will need tissues, but it is a feel-good feeling that will warm your insides."

Safe Beginnings by Christine Duncan

Safe Beginnings by Christine Duncan takes place in a battered women's shelter. Counselor Kaye Berreano is unable to save the new resident when a fire breaks out. There are plenty of suspects in Mary Ellen's death, including Kaye's soon-to-be-ex. Arson investigator Farrell even has a theory that Mary Ellen's death wasn't an accident or murder, but suicide. The safe house residents are moved in a temporary shelter and Kaye's hours are cut. Determined to prove that she didn't misjudge her client's mental state so badly, Kaye starts her own investigation.

The characters are well-rounded; the situation is realistic and timely; the plot is peppered with clues and red herrings; and the first person point of view gives the story immediacy. Safe Beginnings - a 2003 Bloody Dagger Award Nominee - is an all-around good read.

Our hearts go out to those who have lost homes, possessions, and - far more importantly - loved ones. We can't imagine the suffering they have endured, and we're praying for all of them.

Autumn Crossroad by Cheryl N. Warner

I was feeling a little guilty that I decided to read Autumn Crossroad by Cheryl N. Warner this weekend rather than work on a freelance writing project, but I soon realized I made the right decision.

Workaholic Casey Wells has already sacrificed several relationships for her career when she moves to Hollywood to work for a high-powered public relations firm. Shawn Lafferty can't get her attention any other way, so her bets her five thousand dollars that she can't sustain a relationship with him while she wheels and deals her way up the ladder of success.

Casey's complex relationship with her Marine colonel father and Shawn's relationship with his cold mother Val - Casey's boss - add depth to the story. Casey strongly feels that she's right where God wants her to be, even though Shawn doesn't think much of the business of making often not-very-ethical-public-figures look good.

Casey starts out wanting to prove she can have it all - a career and a relationship, but when she eventually has to make a choice, her old ideas of success aren't as clear-cut as they originally were.

Autumn Crossroad is a wonderful story with many layers - the story of Casey and Shawn, the stories of the relationships of Casey and Shawn with their parents, and the story of Casey and Val finding what is really important in life.

I'm definitely looking forward to reading Honey Loffington's story in Book Two of The Loffington Twins, Private Investigators: Sweeter Than Honey.

Cancer: A Personal Challenge by Dr. Bob Rich

This is the first book I have read on the subject of
cancer, and I finished the final chapter with an
understanding of not only the physical challenges
patients face, but the mental and emotional ones as
well.

Dr. Bob Rich and his contributors take the reader from
diagnosis to healing, sprinkling the text with
emotional pieces written by real cancer sufferers. He
points out that there is no definitive cure; there is
no definitive cause. There are new-age-ish treatments
suggested I don’t necessarily agree with, but their
inclusion demonstrates how widespread the epidemic
really is and that each patient must ultimately decide
on his own course of action. But there definitely is
reason for hope, which makes this not a text-book or
self-help book, but a study into the effects of
disease on real people, and how a patient’s outlook
plays a part in his healing. I recommend this book to
anyone affected by cancer, or anyone who hopes to
never be.

The New Day Dawns by Grace Anne Schaefer

I have to start this with a disclaimer. I was one of three editors on The New Day Dawns by Grace Anne Schaefer, so I have to admit to a little bias! However, the book has garnered several favorable reviews and been well-received by readers, so my good opinion isn't total bias.

The New Day Dawns is Book 1 in the five-book People of the Frozen Earth family saga. The story takes place nearly 2000 years ago on the Western Great Plains; the ancestors of the People of the Frozen Earth had crossed over the land bridge from Siberia seeking a new life. The young warrior Mach and the chief's daughter Horda are preparing to experience the Mating Rituals. Their joyous plans are interrupted and almost destroyed by a combination of their own actions, tribal mores, evil enemies, and forces of nature. They must use all their skills; strengths; and beliefs in themselves, each other, and the values of the People to not only survive, but triumph. In the end, they learn that what they have become is more important than what they were.

One of my favorite reviews is written by someone who was surprised he liked the book and even more surprised to be writing a review.

Grace Anne wanted to donate 10% of the Internet sales of her books to an Indian charity. I recommended the International Anglican Fellowship, specifying the donations be designated for the Lakota Sioux. When Grace Anne learned more about these people, she became very excited. "These are my people!" she exclaimed. The Lakota Sioux are among the descendants of the People of the Frozen Earth.

After she committed to tithing Internet sales to the Lakota Sioux, Walter Kilian, the Executive Director of the International Anglican Fellowship (IAF), decided he should read the book if he intended to recommend it. He wrote a review in the latest issue of the IAF newsletter. The review is on page 2 of Vol. 10, Easter Season, 2005 - the URL will change when a new issue comes out.

He wrote: "It was absolutely beyond my expectation. As a retired naval officer I've read all of John (sic) Clancy's books and several of John Grisham's books that Cynthia has introduced me to. This is as good as those and the IAF is making money too! . . . I had a difficult time putting the book down and perhaps best of all Cynthia did too!"

Thundering Heart deals realistically with issues of faith, self-esteem, loss, trust, and love. An enjoyable and inspiring story.

To Live Again by Lauralee Bliss begins with Janice and Len Dawson and their two children living a wonderful life. The only flaw is a strained relationship between Len and his brother Paul, but Paul's wife Katy and Janice are close friends.

Then disaster strikes - Len is diagnosed with cancer. Not only does Janice have to deal with her continued responsibilities of homeschooling their daughters and trying to keep their lives normal, but she is faced with Len's physical deterioration and his anger over his illness. When Len dies, Janice takes on the burden of supporting the family financially and emotionally.

However, she felt God had turned her back on her, so she turns her back on God. But living without faith just doesn't seem to work.

Unbelievably, a year later, tragedy befalls again. Katy is stricken with cancer and dies after only a few weeks. Paul is devastated, and Janice realizes she has to help him and his children. In the end, they find both faith and love.

To Live Again is a very touching story - with moments of great sadness and moments of great joy intermingled with a love story tied together with a lesson in faith.

Between a Clutch and a Hard Place by Gayle Trent is a genre new to me: comedic mystery. The sleuth, Myrtle Crumb, is truly a unique character. She got involved the mystery because she wouldn't be outdone by a local fashion plate, so she had to visit the consignment shop and find something just a little better.

She not only found a pocketbook, but she also found an intriguing note inside that led to a mystery. What happened to the previous owner? So Myrtle started sleuthing ... unlike any sleuthing you've seen before.

The story is written in first person, and just reading Myrtle's charming chatter is delightful, and the twist at the end is a surprise.

Between a Clutch and a Hard Place was nominated for the 2004 Appalachian Book of the Year.

A Time to Dance by Diana Brandmeyer is a short contemporary inspirational romance that I thoroughly enjoyed.

Deni Sparks and Shane Anderson want the same piece of property - Deni for a home and stained glass studio, Shane for a lakefront development. Deni inherited the property, but she must live in the rundown house for three months or, according to the terms of the will, it goes to Shane.

Deni and Shane have to learn to trust in God, regardless of who ends up with the property. And in the end, love proves to be more important than property.

A Time to Dance was nominated for the RIO, the Reviewers International Organization's annual Dorothy Parker Award of Excellence, and was also an EPPIE finalist.

A fellow Christian E-Author recommended Transgression, and I was at first intrigued by the interesting marketing concept. Author Randall Ingermanson sells the e-book on his Web site for $8.88; however, if you promise to recommend the book to one or more friends after reading it - if you like it - you can order the book at a discount or even free. Since I always recommend books I like, I chose the free download option. And by the time I came across an opportunity to click a link to recommend the book, I was ready to do so! Not only did I send personal e-mails to several friends I thought would enjoy the book, but I'm also posting a review here. So in my case, this marketing technique generated a lot of word-of-mouth advertising.

And it worked because this is a great read! I wasn't sure I'd enjoy reading a novel written by a physicist - one involving time travel and a plot to assassinate the apostle Paul - but I couldn't put my e-book reader down. And now I can't wait to read the other two books in the City of God series, Premonition and Retribution.

Rivka Meyers, a Messianic Jew, is in Jerusalem on her first archaeology dig. She meets Ari Kazan, a theoretical physicist, and lapsed Jew, who is furious when he learns of her faith. Ari is working with Damien West, an experimental physicist, on creating a wormhole for time travel, unaware that Damien has a private agenda.

Damien secretly completed the wormhole and, since Rivka showed up at the lab at the wrong time, ends up taking her with him back to Jerusalem in 57 AD. Ari follows, in spite of his antipathy to Rivka's religion and his conviction that history cannot be changed, because he has to care deeply for Rivka.

Transgression is a rich and fascinating blend of characters, setting, suspense, history, romance, science, and religion. I felt like I was back in first century Jerusalem with the early Christians.

I loved reading about Ari explaining physics to his first century friend Baruch and Baruch relating everything to miracles. Most of us think of science as being exact and complete, but the author points out how much is really unknown. Ari came to see there was much he couldn't understand - he both believed and didn't believe.

I look forward to spending more time with Rika, Ari, and the people of the City of God.

His Brother's Child by Robin Bayne

This book has been out awhile - in fact, it was one of the first e-books I ever read. When I ran across His Brother's Child in my e-book library recently, I remembered how much I enjoyed it and decided I should share that it was one of the books that got me excited about electronic publishing.

Braci Martin had come to put her faith in herself and her career instead of God. Kyle Lacey wanted a Christian wife who would stay at home and raise a family. Braci finding her faith again and Kyle accepting her need for a career would be challenges enough ... even without the child and the family secrets he entailed.

Author Robin Bayne delivers a message of faith without being preachy. The hero and heroine and the secondary characters are likable and intriguing. I'm not the only one who liked His Brother's Child - it was an EPPIE finalist in 2000.

Enemy of the Valley - A Civil War romance novel set in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia

Enemy of the Valley is extraordinary! Author L.R. Bliss completes this Civil War trilogy with the same attention to details and well-defined characters seen in the previous books. Realistic dialogue and a meaningful plot bring this time period to life. The Gospel message is also ingeniously woven into this story, giving it power to eternally enrich the lives of readers.

Although the Civil War is over, the hearts of many in the South were crying for revenge. The Union Army had burned the Shenandoah Valley, leaving families homeless and hopeless. Sally Dartland and her family move into this area, after their home in Maine is destroyed by a storm. They planned to stay with a relative, although their neighbors had different plans for these Northerners. After being told to pack up and move, the harassment against the Dartland family intensifies until the flames of hatred burn out of control. Nathan Wendall, one of the leaders in the valley, falls in love with Sally, and tries desperately to end the persecution. Will his love and faith lead his neighbors out of the valley of despair?

The author has provided the reader with an evenhanded look at the issues confronting both the North and South. The beautiful Shenandoah Valley had been deliberately scorched in an effort to "bury" the Confederacy. As a result, tensions against the Northerners ran high. Readers will feel the anguish on both sides of the Mason Dixon line as America tries to become one nation under God. Scattered throughout the book are historical references, which add depth to the story. Several of the characters visit Washington D.C., and readers are treated to a description of the capital at that time period.

Yet, the heart of this book is the spiritual application. The issue of revenge is examined in the lives of these characters. The Word of God is enacted through the words and actions of the people in this book. There is a gently beauty in the writing, which will allow readers to think on these things and ponder them in their hearts.

Enemy of the Valley ends this trilogy on a high note!

This reviewer was especially pleased to see Clara Barton walking among the wounded and offering comfort and hope. The author concentrates not so much on the politics of this period, but on the characters' response to this war. The high hopes of a quick victory were soon replaced with the stark reality of death and destruction on both sides.

However, besides the historical significance of this book, the author connects with the reader on a deeper level. The message of Christ's death on the Cross was taken to the battlefield at Fredericksburg. There, it was enacted for two men to see and experience firsthand. Yet, the story doesn't end there. The author follows Josiah Simmons as he walks in the newness of life, while trying to cope with the reality of death all around him.

L.R. Bliss is a gifted author who not only brings a piece of American history to life, but gently reminds readers of the One who gave His life for all. The words and message of this book will live in the hearts and minds of readers for a long time.

In the Crossfire goes beyond the titles of Rebel and Yankee to see inside the hearts of men.

Imprisoned is an impressive piece of historical fiction!

This second book in the series focuses on the life of Josiah Simmons, a Union soldier from Maine. After leaving the Southern family that nursed him back to health, Josiah returns home for a brief time. He meets Montgomery Cahill, his sister Mary's beau, and there is an instant and violent dislike for this arrogant man. When Josiah returns to his fighting unit, he finds that his new superior officer is none other than Captain Cahill. Their mutual hatred leads to an act of ultimate treachery, whereby Josiah is captured and imprisoned at the notorious Confederate camp near Andersonville, Georgia. Will Josiah be able to survive the harsh physical conditions, as well as the trying spiritual times?

This is a perfect sequel to In the Crossfire. In the first book, Josiah is brought to eternal life through the selfless act of a Confederate soldier. Now in this book, he must learn to walk in Christ's path. Hatred and deception follow him at every turn, yet he knows that as a Christian he needs to forgive. The author has done an outstanding job of placing Josiah in, not only a physical prison, but a spiritual one as well. The reader is shown the transforming and freeing power of the Gospel through these well-defined characters. As a result, the blessings of this book's message will come to life in the hearts of those who know the Lord.

It was wonderful to continue this story with familiar characters. As the war drags on, readers will notice the passage of time as the well-researched plot mentions battles and other date-setting names. It was interesting to note that Captain Cahill was a believer in the relatively new thinking of Charles Darwin. This theory also provided a sharp contrast to the Christian message.
The budding romance between Josiah and Patty Patterson experiences a setback, as Patty's father arranges a marriage between her and a wealthy plantation owner. The emotional anguish felt by both Patty and Josiah adds to the novel's tension and further highlights the spirit of hopelessness that shadows the characters.

Imprisoned is a factual and faith-filled book that shows readers the horrors from history and the honors from Heaven.

An Inspirational Western!

Okay, this isn't really a "small press" title, but it's so unusual I wanted to post my review here. This is a Christian western!

"When Amos Taylor steals a parson's clothes, he thinks he's found the ideal disguise to hide his life of crime. . .until the local residents start expecting Amos to actually serve as their preacher!. . . the Lord works in Mysterious Ways."

Terry Burns has a way with characterization, and his inspirational western "Mysterious Ways" kept me turning the pages until the end. Not an easy feat, because I usually shy away from westerns. But this story, with clean language, a quick paced-plot and Scriptural content, compelled me to keep on reading. I will be watching for Terry's next book!

Book Proposals That Sell --by Terry Whalin

This is a terrific resource, written by Christian writer/editor W. Terry Whalin. This is published by a small press and available in e-book or trade paperback.

After publishing eight works of fiction, I am working on my first
non-fiction book, so Terry Whalin’s handbook has arrived right on time
for me. I am so pleased I haven’t submitted my book proposal to a publisher
based on the tips I’d gleaned from other sources–Terry’s book spells
out exactly what I need to do to grab an editor’s attention.

I already knew that publishers contract writers of non-fiction based on
their proposal, as opposed to a full manuscript. Terry expands on this
fact and not only explains why, but enlightens the reader on the daily
activities of the average editor. He then provides twenty-one tips for preparing a
proposal that will sell. Some are pieces of advice which at first seem
like common sense, “Always take the attitude of a learner,” but Terry takes
it a step further. He provides real-life examples of how this statement
relates to, and can help, the writer. Other tips gear the writer toward making
a superb presentation–telling why he or she should write that book. How
to make sure the writer gets a response on his proposal.

Finally, Terry provides a sample book proposal, one which did result in
a sale. I highly recommend this handbook to any writer who wishes to sell
their non-fiction manuscript.
